Google Map Maker MapUp – Pokhara

Posted By: @bhu1st On Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Pokhara being one of the most popular visitor / tourist location of Nepal deserves its geographic information to be digitized and put in Google Maps. Yearly thousands of tourists visit Pokhara. We could guess about the times they tried Google Maps with expectations to get navigation directions. Not only tourists but all Nepalese who live/visit Pokhara will sure like seeing Google Maps of Pokhara improve.

With this use case in mind, GDG Kathmandu organized an one day mapping event called MapUp Pokhara on Dec. 15th 2012. MapUp Pokhara won't have been thought of without extensive support from Sankalpa- "Committed for a Better Society". We are glad to have them as our co-organizers.

We had a very good event in Pokhara. Our initial expected number of participants were ~50, but we ended up having ~80 persons attending Pokhara MapUp. This introduced slight difficulties in our "event management" but overall impression of the event went great.

I personally felt this was first of such gathering in Pokhara (all of the colleges participated, common gathering point: Google Maps, Google tech), participants from Pokhara are expecting more of such events and suggested to conduct such program in all other districts of Nepal. There were few guys travelling to Pokhara from other district just to attend this mapup :) We managed high b/w and more stable internet in Pokhara than in Kathmandu event but due to unexpected increase in participants we have some difficulties. Also, MapUp Pokhara ignited few other discussion: eg. formulating GDG Pokhara, mapups in other districts of Nepal which are near Pokhara.

Overall event excitement was better in Pokhara. Participants were very active throughout the event. Gradually as time went by the event became more engaged and we saw more contributions coming from Pokhara live. If you ever visit Pokhara in future you should thank us for our contributions to Google Maps there :)

Google Map Maker MapUp – Kathmandu

A MapUp is an event in which a group of people come together to improve the places they know and like seeing it on Google Maps by using Google Map Maker. MapUps can focus on the map of a neighborhood, region, popular visitor/tourist locations or even for a particular feature such as university premises, organizational premises, personal areas, hiking trails or cycling routes. MapUps can also serve to teach new mappers how to use Google Map Maker, bring together experienced mappers, and everything in between.

kathmandu mapup 2012 (1)

MapUps are community run events where we work extensively on using / adding / contributing geographic information near us in Google Maps with Google Map Maker tool. Such contribution will help millions of Google Maps users, developers, travelers, tourists and government in the long run.

kathmandu mapup 2012 (2)

During MapUps mappers shouldn't add info directly from print/published maps as that might be copyrighted info belonging to the map publisher. Instead, the info should be added based on mappers' personal knowledge of their neighborhoods / towns. The more you know about your area the more details / accurate geographic information you can contribute to Google Maps.

As the organizer we were initially worried about how the event will go because we haven't had experience organizing mapping event before, but it became gradually interesting as we started contributing to Map Maker in live. The review process, mapping pulse of local contribution were exciting. The sessions were designed to help new mappers get started using map maker tool. Also, Google maps based application development speaker session was interesting for active mappers, as they said – they got ideas on how their contribution to Google Maps are being used by Developers Community.

kathmandu mapup 2012 (14)

The event began slowly covering all technical aspects of how Google Maps actually works. It's to all of our surprise that it's actually us, the people of Kathmandu whose active contribution makes Google Maps of Kathmandu better. Contributing to Google Maps was in-deed a great experience. Getting to know fellow mappers in the community and learning/sharing environment the event created was motivating.

MapUp events may sound uninteresting at first to developers and others who are familiar with Google Maps just as the end users, but for starting / active contributors who are using Google Map Maker tool the feeling of making maps of our places better is awesome.
